Can not thank the nurses on ward 16 enough for their patience and understanding when mam has been on their ward for the past 4 days. I am a long way from home and her only daughter, and they were so polite and helpful in bringing mam to the phone and keeping me updated. Never made me feel I was being a bother and understood my concern. Thank you so much.

MY 86 y.o father was sent to A/E by local surgery NP via urgent ambulance. My father had moderate ( pain score 6/7) abdominal pain and vomiting for 6 hours since he woke at 08.30 and hadn't had anything to drink or eat for 16 hrs by the time he attended A/E. This was during a period of very hot weather. He has type 2 diabetes, irregular heart beat (on blood thinners) and is disabled following a fractured hip last November. He was triaged very quickly. They did his BP, temperature and pulse and took blood samples and asked a few questions, but didn't assess his pain score. Paramedics had given him 2 paracetamol but he'd vomited immediately afterwards. We then waited for 2 hrs in the waiting area. When he was eventually seen he was put in a paediatric room which was round a corner from the main part , so not in sight of the nurses "station" .Presumably this was because they were short of rooms. The Doctor saw my father and one of the first things he asked was whether he had a drip in, which he didn't. He was then quite quickly sent for an X Ray and whilst he was away a nurse came to put a drip in. He was then given some I.V paracetamol and I.V fluids to rehydrate him. The nursing and medical staff were generally friendly and efficient but as he's 86 , it could realistically have been something serious (eg intestinal obstruction or ischaemic bowel due to his irregular heart beat) and he was in considerable pain and vomiting, he should have had a drip put in, his pain score assessed ,pain relief given and an X Ray more quickly. My father waited the same length of time to be seen as other people who were much younger and not in obvious pain or distress or vomiting eg a gentleman in his 50's with a badly sprained ankle! I'd also mention that the hand sanitiser dispenser in the paediatric room my father was in was empty and , although a senior member of nursing staff tried to use it and realised it was empty, nobody refilled it during the 4-5 hours we spent in the room. The trust closed the A/E department at Bishop Auckland but failed to make adequate provision for emergency care at the other 2 hospitals eg Durham and Darlington beforehand.

Old Elvet, Green Ln, Durham DH1 3JX, UK – 0191 386 5081

While it's difficult to get an appointment if you are unable to call at 8:30, Dr Peat listened to me well and was very helpful, and was friendly and approachable. The only thing I wish he didn't do was announce my weight after weighing me (fortunately I don't have issues with it personally but I know people who do).

Never had a bad experience here although it can take a while to get an appointment sometimes. Staff are always helpful and attentive and know what I need.

Jobcentre Plus

Elvet House, Hallgarth St, Durham DH1 3BP, UK – 0800 169 0190

I went to the Job Centre Plus for a 'Catch up' appointment. When I entered the office I was met by a polite gentleman who took my details and asked me to sit in a waiting area. After only a couple of minutes I was called over to have the appointment. The gentleman I spoke to was very personable and courteous. After a quick chat we were all done. All in all, a very pleasant experience. The only reason I gave it four stars was the location and the potential parking problems you may encounter at busy times.

Staff can be belligerent or very helpful depending on their internal politics and are quit constant to the individual, your referred to the wrong one you have had it,

Leaks Chemist

Blue House Buildings, High St, Durham DH1 1AR, UK – 0191 384 7708

On Thursday 1st March 2018, when the North East had an amber weather warning for snow and ice, Leaks delivered my husband's essential medication to our house. The conditions outside were horrible but the driver came as near to our house in West Rainton as he could and then walked to our door. I can't thank the staff enough, especially the driver. Had you not made the delivery, we wouldn't have blamed you ,but you went above and beyond in getting it to us. Thank you so much.

Great chemist full of good value (usually branded) things to buy from medicines, soap and toothpaste to toilet cleaner, cards and batteries. Always worth a look round and usually much cheaper than the big retailers across in Gilesgate.

Vision Express Opticians

Unit 8 High Street, Prince Bishops Shopping Centre, Durham DH1 3UJ, UK – 0191 383 2482

Visited the branch in Durham with my Mum who suffers from Alzheimers. The staff were amazing with her, each team member was extremely patient, respectful and considerate with her. I highly recommend this branch and it's team. I was overwhelmed at the service this branch provided to us during our visit and only wish more big named high street retailers and their staff could provide Alzheimers suffers the same level of service and respect the deserve. Thank you.

I walked into this store today as I was in Durham. My glasses are around 4 years old and are becoming a little weak. Few times recently I have knocked them and had to have them adjusted. I have called in a couple of NE branches of Vision Express. But today was different to every other visit, you ask why? From the moment I walked in the door to the moment I walked out I was treated like Royalty. The staff did everything possible to ensure I was sorted, and satisfaction with the service. One of the young ladies tried to sort my frames out but was unsure, so asked a senior member of staff to assist with correcting the frames. By the time this was done the frames look great again. I have also booked my eye test in for the NY as a result of the service.

Alastair Wade Optometrists

8 Saddler St, Durham DH1 3NP, UK – 0191 384 9770

Trustworthy and competent. Our family has used Wades in Durham for a number of years and trust this company. They invest in the latest technology and keep abreast of scientific developments. Examples: they were one of the first in the UK to use Ortho-K lenses which work so well, and is still being used (4 years later?) by one of our children and I think they were the first UK opticians to use 85% retinal scanning. The staff are friendly, have a great attitude, are very helpful and knowledgeable. I use a common high street brand opticians which is OK for me based on price, but despite claiming to have the latest technology, their equipment is not, in my opinion, as good and as leading edge as that found in specialist opticians like Wades. Wade’s general ambition appears is be to get a person’s eye-sight corrected if possible, i.e. a child/young adult, so they should not need glasses or contact lenses in the longer term, which is, in my opinion, different to some other ‘eye care’ companies. Hopefully by their mid-twenties, our children will not need glasses… that’s their and our intention. We also used Wades for Vision Therapy which transformed both our children’s eye sight which then significantly helped with their reading, writing and coordination; football and cricket became good fun because they were no longer ‘cack handed’, and confidence ballooned. We were mighty concerned at the beginning of the vision-therapy course as floor exercises seemed remote from eye-sight but we stuck with the tailored programme and regular reviews so see fantastic transformations. Some of these exercises are similar to those done by optometrists in the 1930’s and 1940’s as my parents recall; it would be great for children, labelled as ‘dyslexic symptoms’ to be assessed for this treatment. Summary: Highly recommended based on our experience.

My little boy has dyslexia and often visits for treatment. The staff are great and we'll trained. They are very professional and friendly as well as great with children. They have certainly helped my little boy.

Durham City Physio Ltd

55A Old Elvet, Durham DH1 3HN, UK – 0191 706 8268

Ive been a client at Durham City Physio for over 4 years, they’ve helped keep me in shape to achieve my sporting ambitions from Park Run to Iron Man triathlon. This years journey to Iron Man triathlon race #4 (of a goal of 10) looked like it was game over when a run related foot injury stopped me in my tracks in April 2018. I was very demoralised, but a course of Physio & appropriately targeted Shock Wave Therapy helped get me back on track. #recommended.

I was very fortunate to stumble across this practice. Trudy was incredibly helpful and thorough, and I noted some net improvements as soon as I took her advice on board. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for professional, friendly physiotherapists.
