Banks

HSBC

1 Saddler St, Durham DH1 3NR, UK – 0345 740 4404

The bank is larger than the one in Windsor, Surrey. And they have a Premier section, which Windsor does not. So their customer service was shockingly sub par. I was really surprised that the Premier officer on the day did not want to help me even though I am a premier client. I tried to approach their premier guy, but he was on a mission to avoid contact. This is very annoying as HSBC tries very hard to sell its premium brand?! I was really confused. The reason I gave it a 3 star was because the young woman at the counter was the best part of the experience. She deserved a 5 star rating while her premier colleague and the older and less than helpful gentleman at the counter, who was dismissive and not very customer orientated, deserved s zero!. Ms. Kahlbom, brava. And thank you.

I've never had any issues with them, and I've banked there for over three years now. Unsure why everyone else is giving them low scores.

Atom Bank

The Rivergreen Centre, Durham DH1 5TS, UK – 0333 399 0050

Overall a good starter experience with Atom Bank. Applied for a 1yr fixed savers account and although I had a few issues with the app at first, it worked fine the next day once the initial rush had died down. The rate was not great (as is to be expected given the state of the economy) but was still the best I could find, so full marks there. Where they do lose a star however is for their security. They insist that you set up three different types of login, two of which in my opinion are pretty insecure. The fact that these methods HAVE to be setup means that even if I don't use them myself, they are there for potential fraudsters to exploit. Very disappointing for such a new, tech based bank.

I have just opened a three year bond, no problems this bank came up with best interest rates recommended by Martin Lewis on his showed, government backed so this was the one for me.

Framwellgate Dental Surgery

I have been to the Surgery several times, and I must be honest about the really really great job they do, (and I hate going to the dentists)..not so any more. The receptionist was absolutely brilliant, and the actual dental work was of a high professional standard with very reasonable cost(s).What more can I say, but thanks a million!

I have used this dental surgery for several years and always found the care to be excellent. The dentists and staff are friendly and conscientious.

University Hospital of North Durham

North Rd, Durham DH1 5TW, UK – 0191 333 2333

Bit unfair to drop a star really, as the staff are marvellous, and can’t be faulted! My complaint is about the parking!!! I had an appointment there on 24/4/18 for which I was half an hour early. By the time I “abandoned “ my car, I was 10 minutes late!! I am disabled, and have a Blue Badge for parking, which I know does not guarantee a place, but, one row of about 10 disabled bays, had 8 cars not displaying their entitlement to park there!!! Probably frustrated like myself, but it meant I, and no doubt others, had to dump our cars anywhere!! I had to leave mine in a Staff bay, and walk too far for my health! I was really ill by the time I got in, and had to get a wheelchair to take me back to my car. It is time to ticket anyone using these bays, making it illegal to use them unless they qualify!! I realise the parking is not the problem of the NHS, but it must be brought to the attention of the people concerned!

Admitted to Ambulatory Care today, brilliant experience and I’m a nurse so can Judge well. Everyone was incredibly professional, caring and 10 out of 10 for swift action. I had every investigation, three trips for different scans to XRay, all in one day. Thank you so much x

Bella chiesa immersa nel verde

Emmanuel Church

The Durham Centre, Belmont Industrial Estate, Durham DH1 1TN, UK – 0191 386 1077

I was greeted very warmly on my first visit to Emmanuel Church and found it very friendly. The best way to feel part of this Church is to join a small group and get to know a few people really well. I love being a part of this Church and will certainly try to reach out to befriend others and particularly newcomers.

Don't like "reviewing" churches because we're not called to "critique" but to "commit," but definitely faithful, fruitful, friendly and a place that's very real and relevant. Especially the Chester-le-Street group.

Local Restaurants & Places to Eat around Durham

Akarsu Turkish Restaurant & Grill

32 A Silver Street, Durham DH1 3RD, UK – 0191 383 0292

Another great evening and meal never fails. Warm welcome and though full house service a Nd food were fantastic. Great place to have my birthday meal plus the Turkish music ensemble with hint of Scotland singing happy birthday was brilliant. Thanks to all the staff for all their help.

Probably the best kebab I had in the UK. The lunch deal is great and the service is friendly and pleasant

Nadon Thai - Durham

69 Crossgate, Durham DH1 4PR, UK – 0191 374 1157

Travelled all way from Nottingham to Durham just to have lunch at Nadon Thai!!! Just kidding. Went there for lunch twice as it’s reasonably priced and great food variety. Excellent customer service. Looking forward to a third time visit with my sis in December 💕

The staff were lovely, a few things let this place down for me. Some were simple fixes......of you sell fresh fruit juices please serve fresh fruit juice. I ordered an Orange and mango drink assuming it to be fresh - A J2O? Is this for real? The restaurant was cold, the food passable borderline OK, it was however, beautifully decorated, but the starters especially the fish cakes were disappointing, soggy and lifeless, vegi spring roll to hard and crispy on the outside and flavourless.

Finbarr's Restaurant

Aykley Heads House, Aykley Heads, Durham DH1 5TS, UK – 0191 307 7033

We were a party of 9 at a work Christmas Dinner and were very well looked after. Restaurant is gorgeous inside, very elegant. The bar was cosy (a little too warm at one point with 9 of us, but we had fun). Drinks are reasonably priced for a place like this. Service was friendly and efficient (especially the lady looking after us in the room upstairs). Food was delicious - steaks were perfectly cooked, chips crisp and desserts tasty. Cheese croquettes - could serve a couple instead of one. Steak could be accompanied by a few more fries too (the fish cakes got lots though). Great meal overall and excellent service.

Had a cracking evening on our works Christmas night out. The food was lovely, the staff were attentive and cheerful and we had a private dinning room just for our party, which was a real bonus. I'd be happy to eat here again

Durham High School for Girls

Farewell Hall, South Rd, Durham DH1 3TB, UK – 0191 384 3226

My daughter has attended this school for 5 years and I have been very impressed by the level of care shown to all girls in the school. The staff will go over and above the average to help girls in need either with school work or over personal issues. There is a warmth and security in the school environment in which girls thrive and can develop their own personalities without fear of ridicule. Many opportunities are open to the girls including foreign trips, Duke of Edinburgh, Charitable work, sport, cooking, debating etc. There exists a range of bursaries so girls from all different economic backgrounds can attend. I rate this school very highly.
